21 September 2017

Last Tuesday, within the 61st General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency- scheduled on 18th - 22nd September -, a side event took place involving Sogin, the Italian State-owned company responsible for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and radioactive waste management.

As the name of the event suggests, “International Peer Review of the Sogin Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management Program in Italy”, it was the occasion to present and discuss the outcomes of the independent review (Peer Review) performed by the IAEA on Sogin decommissioning and radioactive waste management program.

The event was attended, among others, by the Italian Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Maria Assunta Accili, the Deputy Director General of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy, Mikhail Chudakov, and the Director of the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology, Cristophe Xerri, as well as by Sogin president, Mr. Marco Ricotti and Sogin CEO, Mr. Luca Desiata.

The event was also the occasion for our Country to donate to the IAEA a bust of Italian physicist and Nobel Laureate Enrico Fermi for the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Agency.

The bust, crafted by Italian sculptor Achille Guzzardella, was unveiled in the presence of the IAEA Director General, Yukiya Amano, and Ambassador Accili, who underlined Fermi's outstanding contribution to the advancement of nuclear science and technology.
