Itrec plant, ok to Sogin's project for fuel dry-storage
03 April 2020
The National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ISIN) approved, in tha past few days, Sogin's project for the dry storage of the Elk River irradiated fuel present at the Rotondella ITREC plant.
64 elements of irradiated fuel, from the uranium-thorium cycle, coming from the American Elk River reactor are in fact stored in the plant's pool.
The solution adopted by Sogin calls for a dry storage, with the placement of the irradiated fuel in specially made, highly resistant and shielding containers (casks). This will further improve the safe management of radioactive waste and irradiated fuel, awaiting its transfer to the National Repository.
ISIN confirmed the compliance of Sogin's project with international standards and with nuclear safety and radiation protection requirements.
