Open Gate 2019: Registrations are open for visiting the nuclear power plants under decommissioning on April 13 and 14
26 February 2019
Sogin’s technical staff will host 3,000 citizens in the
plants of Trino, Caorso, Latina and Garigliano. The event will also be
on Instagram with the profile opengate_sogin, hashtag #opengate2019.
- Registrations are open on the
website www.sogin.it for “Open Gate” Third edition, the event promoted
by Sogin on the weekend (13-14 April). This is a chance for 3,000
citizens to know more about the procedures and technologies adopted
during the decommissioning of the Italian power plants. Registrations
will close on Sunday, 31 March.
The event sees the participation of four
plants: Trino (Vercelli) – a plant that, during the
operation period, reached the world record of full-power functioning – Caorso
(Piacenza) – Italian biggest plan -, Latina – the
first plant built in Italy and the most powerful in Europe at that time
-, and Garigliano (Caserta) – with its “white sphere”
containing the reactor.
Two visits are planned for the sites of Trino,
Caorso and Garigliano: “controlled area” and “industrial area”;
while only the “industrial area” can be visited in the
Latina site. Within the “industrial area” the access is permitted to
children from the age of six, if accompanied by an adult. During the
visits, lasting about two hours, Sogin’s technical staff will describe a
portion of Italian industrial history, such as the control booths to
monitor reactors, and they will explain the decommissioning operations
and the management of radioactive waste aimed at closing the Italian
nuclear cycle.
To join Open Gate 2019, submit your subscription on
www.sogin.it by 31 March. The structures can host up to 2,896 visitors,
divided by plant: 920 in Trino, 800 in Caorso, 756 in Latina and 420 in
Garigliano. To increase the number of participants, booking can be made
for one day or one specific tour, by choosing amongst the tours
available during the day.
There is an innovation in this Third Edition
of Open Gate: an Instagram Profile opengate_sogin, hashtag
#opengate2019, to receive live updates about the event: pictures, videos
and stories posted by both participants and Sogin’s workers.
The
initiative - that registered great participation in 2015 and 2017- is
now implemented again to highlight Sogin’s commitment in ensuring
information, transparency and participation.
