Sogin at the 2024 Airp National Conference
02 October 2024
This year, Sogin once again participated in the National Congress of the
Italian Association of Radiation Protection (AIRP), which took place in Lucca from 25 to 27 September 2024, with about 200 people in attendance.
The
work programme, introduced by AIRP President
Francesco Mancini, was divided into six different technical and scientific working sessions that included reports, talks and posters. The “Young People's” competition, reserved for the under 35s, was held once again this year, recognising an original work on radiation protection.
The main aspects of radiation protection were covered, from radiation in health care to environmental radioactivity, from characterisation techniques through to monitoring and decommissioning of nuclear power plants and quality in measurements.
Sogin took part in Session 1 "Existing exposure conditions: contaminated sites", chaired by Francesco Mancini (AIRP President and Sogin Radiation Protection Area Manager), Session 4 "Radiation protection, dosimetry and measurement methods", chaired by Luisella Garlati and Massimo Garavaglia, and Session 5 "Impact on the population and sustainability", chaired by Mariagabriella Pugliese and Vittorio Festa.
In particular, our colleagues presented the following speeches:
- How to produce radioactive waste from an environmental groundwater reclamation process: the case of the TAF plant at the ITREC facility in Trisaia (Giovanni Varasano)
- Determination of Pu, Am-241 and U quantities using integrated gamma spectrometry and passive neutron counting (Alessio Decembrino and Moira Straface)
- General and specific removal levels: IAEA news and possible applications (Francesco Mancini)
- Levels of removal and radioactive waste between sustainability and radiation protection (Alfonso Maria Esposito)
- Numeric methods for studying the flow and transportation of radionuclides in porous media, aimed at the safety analysis of the surface disposal repository of radioactive waste at the National Repository (Jacopo De Santis)
- Interaction between justification and optimisation, basic safety principles and sustainable development of the 2030 Agenda (Roberto Falcone)
- Options for reusing irradiated graphite (Gianluigi Migliore)
As part of the Poster session, Sogin also presented three papers:
Participation provided an important opportunity for discussion and updating for all professionals in the sector, confirming Sogin's commitment to promoting nuclear and environmental safety.
