Sogin Group at the 2024 Researchers' Night

01 October 2024

Major enthusiasm for the 2024 Researchers' Night, an event held on 27 and 28 September, promoted by the European Commission since 2005, with the aim of creating opportunities for researchers and citizens to meet and disseminate scientific culture.

Once again this year, the Sogin Group renewed its membership of the NET scieNcETogether project, a partnership of leading research institutions, universities, companies, institutions and associations to promote scientific dissemination. The NET European Night was a special tribute to the life of Maria Skłodowska Curie, the extraordinary scientist who revolutionised the world of physics and chemistry and first person in history to receive two Nobel Prizes.

The Group participated in the event with two different initiatives: opening the doors of the Sogin and Nucleco facilities in Casaccia, and an exhibition space in the Net Village at the City of the Other Economy at the Testaccio district in Rome.

On the Sogin tour at the Casaccia facilities, visitors had the opportunity to explore the Hot Cells at the OPEC-1 facility, and discover how the Glove Boxes at the IPU Facility were dismantled using an alpha-tight containment tent. On the Nucleco tour, they visited areas undertaking laboratory activities, radiological characterisation and radioactive waste management. Adults and children were also involved in interactive events to encourage curiosity and entertainment, such as small experiments, games and video projections.

A significant turnout was also recorded at the NET Village exhibition space. Here, Sogin technicians explained the operations of a nuclear power plant to young and old, and how its dismantling takes place safely, based on an exhibition of scale models of the reactor and turbine building at the Caorso facility, and showed the safety devices that are worn during the different operations.

The "Night" in Casaccia and the NET Village were also an opportunity to illustrate the project of the National Repository and Technology Park, the infrastructure that will dispose of all Italian radioactive waste.

Thanks to the commitment and professionalism of many colleagues, the Sogin Group confirmed its commitment to contributing to the dissemination of scientific knowledge, more specifically in the nuclear sector.
