Sogin Group at Ecomondo 2020
05 November 2020
Sogin Group took part in the
24th edition of Ecomondo, one of the most known events on green economy organized by the
Italian Exhibition Group.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was held on an online digital platform from 3 to 15 November. The Group participated in the panel on “Green Deal, Circular Economy, and Sustainability in clearance and restoration of contaminated sites during the pandemic”, chaired by Marco Petrageli Papini (University of Rome), Donatella Giacopetti (UNEM – Unione Energie per la Mobilità) and Alessandro Bratti (ISPRA).
Nucleco and the Group focused on circular economy and the impact of Covid-19 by presenting the environmental remediation project of the former rifle range of the Italian Air Force in
Punta della Contessa (Brindisi). The areas subject to clearance cover a 6-ha land surface along the coast and fall in the scope of Sites of National Interest. The restoration activities include the performance of inspections to detect unexploded military ordnance, demolish buildings, manage traditional waste, and tree-planting across the area.
This operation reaffirms the Group’s commitment towards sustainable development and its contribution to Goal 12(Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns) and Goal 15 (Life on Land) of the UN 2030 Agenda.
The Ecomondo event also featured the General Assembly on Demolitions, a technical meeting on regulations, technologies, and safety measures for civil and industrial demolitions.
This year’s event provided insights on decommissioning, environmental management, safety, demolition processes of an abandoned area, current working site conditions, and future market trends. Sogin disclosed the removal of the concrete monolith containing reinforced concrete from Pit 7.1 of Rotondella ITREC Plant as a best practice of nuclear remediation.
