Radioactive waste management

​​Radioactive waste resulting both from previous plant operations, and from decommissioning activities, are stored in the interim storage facilities of the site. Upon completion of the gradual transfer of the waste to National Repository, all the interim storage facilities will be demolished.

At the end of 2021, the volume of (solid and liquid) radioactive waste, classified according to the Decree of 7 August 2015, in the plant of Casaccia amounts to 519 cubic metres.
The volume may vary based on the year, the continuation of safe maintenance and decommissioning activities and the conditioning techniques for previous waste.

​​Almost all radioactive waste is in solid form (less than 1% is liquid).

The radioactive waste currently located on site, resulted from previous activity of the plant and from decommissioning activities, is temporary stored in the premises of the Plutonium Plant, in the OPEC-1 and OPEC-2 interim storage facilities.

The features of temporary repositories are listed below:

Plutonium Plant interim storage facility

  • Volume of the storage area: 1,300 cubic metres (in 2 storage premises)
  • Maximum storage capacity: 190 cubic metres of radioactive waste
  • Amount of stored waste: 167 cubic metres Medium level radioactive waste
  • Surface: 250 square metres (in 2 storage premises)
  • Type of stored waste: Low Level / Intermediate Level waste
OPEC-1 interim storage facility:
  • Volume of the storage area: 120 cubic metres (in 2 storage premises)
  • Maximum storage capacity: 20 cubic metres of radioactive waste
  • Amount of stored waste: 10 cubic metres of radioactive waste
  • Surface: 250 square metres (in 2 storage premises)
  • Type of stored waste: Intermediate Level waste
OPEC-2 interim storage facility:
  • Volume of the storage area: 3,800 cubic metres (in 12 storage premises)
  • Maximum storage capacity: 660 cubic metres of radioactive waste (approx. 2,300 tanks)
  • Amount of stored waste: in the loading phase (entry into operation on 13 September 2019)
  • Surface: 930 square metres (in 12 storage premises)
  • Type of stored waste: Intermediate Level waste
