Open Gate is a Sogin Group initiative, which began in 2015, and opens the doors of Italian nuclear power facilities undergoing dismantling to the public, families, associations, journalists and stakeholders.
Open Gate is now in its fourth edition! On Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May, more than 3,000 visitors were welcomed at the Caorso (PC), Garigliano (CE), Trino (VC), Latina and, for the first time, at the Itrec facility in Rotondella (MT).
The visits provided an opportunity to walk through the places that represent a piece of our country's industrial history and discuss the work that Sogin technicians carry out on a daily basis, in compliance with the maximum safety criteria, for the dismantling of nuclear facilities and management of the radioactive waste currently stored in temporary repositories at each site, pending their transfer to the National Repository.
Registrations to participate in this edition opened on 14 March, closing on Monday 22 April, having "sold out" at almost all the facilities.
Open Gate was a “plastic-free" event, in line with the sustainable approach underlying the Sogin Group’s operations. It was possible to follow the initiative on Instagram via the opengate_sogin profile, hashtag #opengate2024.
Visits are organised every two years on a spring weekend and, thanks to the different visiting routes on offer, also allow children over 6 to take part. Registrations were made exclusively online.
The event, organised every two years and suspended due to the Covid-19 health emergency, returned after the previous editions in 2015, 2017 and 2019 that were highly successful in terms of participation, confirming the Company's commitment to ensuring information, transparency and participation. A Sogin questionnaire completed by visitors shows that almost all of the participants (97%) hope that this event will be repeated in the future, and for 86%, it was their first experience of visiting a nuclear facility.
