Sogin at the SURRI Workshop – La Sapienza Rome

31 October 2024

A workshop was held from 23 to 25 October 2024 at the Sala Parravano of the Department of Chemistry - Sapienza University of Rome, as part of the SURRI (SUstainable Remediation of Radionuclide Impacts on land and critical materials recovery) project, which began in January 2023 - as part of the Horizon Europe programme - and will end in December 2025.

The session on Friday 25 October was dedicated to Sogin and the activities it carries out. With several presentations by our colleagues, coordinated by the Authorisation, Environment, Radiation Protection and Safety Directorate, participants were able to focus on the salient steps of the decommissioning process and radioactive waste management, more specifically:

  • Sabrina Romani, Electronic Engineer and Radiation Protection Expert, currently Head of Nuclear Authorisation Processes and Technical Regulations, outlined the main operations and challenges relating to the decommissioning of power plants and facilities managed by Sogin;
  • Silvia Iezzi, geologist expert in environmental radiological characterisation, presented a practical case of radiological characterisation of in situ soils at the OPEC facility in Casaccia, highlighting the safety and environmental protection measures;
  • Annafrancesca Mariani, nuclear engineer and Director of the National Repository and Technology Park, outlined Italy’s strategy for radioactive waste management, illustrating the policies and practices in place.

 The workshop represented an important platform for dialogue between professionals, researchers and students, promoting synergies between skills to develop innovative, effective and sustainable solutions in managing radionuclides and critical materials.

 Thanks to the colleagues who have enhanced and showcased the know-how and skills of our Company!
