The primary circuit of the reactor building is the recirculation and depuration system of the cooling water. The first decommissioning activities of the plant involved the decontamination of the primary circuit, through a chemical process called “CORD-UV” (Chemical Oxidation Reduction Decontamination).
The operation resulted in approx. 2.5 cubic metres of radioactive low-level waste (LLW), now conditioned and safely stored in the interim storage facilities of the site. The activity, carried out between 2003 and 2004, also reduced by 200 times radioactivity levels in the working places.
