Construction of D2 temporary storage facility

At the Garigliano power station, a temporary storage facility, called D2, is being built for the temporary storage of manufactured items containing legacy waste, as well as those deriving from other ongoing and future activities related to securing processes. This project is in line with the repository strategy, in which the management of waste produced during decommissioning activities was redefined, pending disposal of waste in the National Repository, once available.
The D2 project was approved by the ISIN regulatory body in December 2021, and the Italian Ministry of Energy Transition (now the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security) excluded this project from the VIA procedure (MiTE Decree DEC 2022-0000026 of 16/02/2022).
In 2022, after the executive design was completed, the excavation of the foundation slab began and the materials from the construction of the test pile were sent for disposal.
