With a storage capacity equal to 2300 stainless steel 285-litre casks, the OPEC-2 repository was designed to temporarily store solid radioactive waste resulting from the previous operations of the Plutonium plant and following decommissioning operations. Such waste also includes that resulting from IPU's glovebox dismantling procedure.
Plant works started in 2013 and ended in 2017 with final checks on the repository safety systems. Sogin created OPEC-2 by restoring and upgrading a building intended to contain "hot cells" but never used.
After obtaining the operating license in 2018, on 13 September 2019 the Supervisory Authority issued a permit authorising a campaign to load the OPEC-2 interim repository that led to the first storage of radioactive waste within the Plutonium plant.
