The research activities carried out in the Plutonium plant resulted in liquid radioactive waste containing Plutonium. Part of this waste, both having organic and aqueous matrix, is stored within the Plutonium plant (1 m³ - Intermediate-level radioactive waste). The remaining amount is in Nucleco interim repositories (about 16 m³ - Low-level radioactive waste).
Accurate research and tests are needed to identify the best treatment and conditioning procedures for this waste. The analysis and qualification of the cementation conditioning treatment for the liquid aqueous waste located in the Plutonium plant ended in December 2018. Cementation operations will be carried out through a new kind of glovebox, which is currently being supplied to the company. Waste treatment and conditioning operations will start following ISIN's approval of the Operational Plan.
The radiological level of the remaining waste, including both organic and aqueous, is currently being analysed to define the best treatment and final conditioning.
