FUEL AND WASTE MANAGEMENT

Removing nuclear materials and irradiated fuel is essential for the release of the sites without radiological risks. Thanks to the GTRI program (Global Threat Reduction Initiative) nuclear materials of non-Italian origin have been removed. Radioactive waste is safely managed and stored in temporary repositories on the site.

ENVIRONMENT

To ensure environmental sustainability, all interventions are designed, implemented and monitored so as not to produce any impact, neither radiological nor conventional, on the environment.

History

The ITREC plant (Treatment and Re-manufacturing Plant for fuel elements) is located within the Trisaia Research Centre ENEA in Rotondella (MT) and it was built between 1960 and 1970 by CNEN (National Committee for Nuclear Energy). Between 1968 and 1970, 84 irradiated Uranium-Thorium fuel elements were shipped to the plant from the experimental reactor Elk River (Minnesota). Subsequently, studies have been conducted on reprocessing and remanufacturing operations for the Uranium-Thorium cycle in order to assess the technical and economic viability of the latter compared to the traditional Uranium-Plutonium cycle. In 1973, CNEN acquired the ownership of the 84 fuel elements from Elk River and reprocessed 20 of these elements. In 1987, following the referendum on nuclear plants, all activities have been suspended. Since then, the safe maintenance of the site was implemented. In 2003, Sogin acquired the plant in order to carry out its decommissioning.
