Nuclear decommissioning, creating new jobs through a new global business

16 April 2013
Davide Tabarelli, President of Nomisma Energia, and Giuseppe Nucci, CEO of Sogin, the state company in charge of the environmental clean-up of Italy’s nuclear sites, presented Nomisma Energia’s report today on the economic/occupational impact of nuclear site clean-up activities in Italy and elsewhere in the world. Sogin estimates that a total of 6.5 billion euros is needed to complete the environmental clean-up of the 4 Italian nuclear power plants, the 4 fuel cycle plants, and construction of the Technology Park, including the national repository for radioactive waste.

Of these total resources, 1.7 billion euros are necessary for dismantling activities alone. The Nomisma Energia study foresees that Sogin’s dismantling activities will produce a total of 12,000 new jobs in decommissioning and satellite activities, 7 new job openings for each million invested, which will peak in 2016 and 2017.
